The 4th Battalion Arkansas Infantry was organized with five companies on November 9, 1861, at Little Rock. Company D was detached and assigned to the 1st Tennessee Regiment Heavy Artillery and never returned to the battalion. The battalion served east of the Mississippi River in the Army of Tennessee until 1863, when it was consolidated with the 4th Regiment Arkansas Infantry. The companies were organized as follows --

Co. A (Pulaski County) enlisted at Little Rock on Sept. 22, 1861.
Co. B (Prairie County) enlisted at Little Rock on Oct. 10, 1861.
Co. C (Clark County) enlisted at Little Rock on Oct. 12, 1861.
Co. D (Pulaski County) enlisted at Little Rock on Oct. 15, 1861.
Co. E (White County) enlisted at Little Rock on Nov. 7, 1861.

It was intended to increase the battalion to a full regiment, but it was rushed across the river to reinforce Columbus, Kentucky, with only five companies (later reduced to four), and never completed its organization as a regiment.
