Civil War - "First Modern War" question.

Greetings from Australia - I'm writing an essay to
discuss a particular battle or campaign of the Civil
War to justify why it should be considered the first
"modern war". Can anyone provide me with guidance
and advice on why Americans feel this way? The
casualty numbers, the cost of waging the war?
