my gg grandpa was lewis Turner and he was living smack dab in the middle of confederate arkansas, Lawrence co. Strawberry, white river, area. He joined the union army and went north to fight and became ill and his wife went to ST.Louis, MO to nurse him, and her father, Elijah JAMES and her brother, who was ill with typhoid. The brother died in the arms of his brother in law, lewis turner. ON her way back to Arkansas she was killed while trying to cross the white river in Lawrence co. area and was made to cross at an unsafe place by the confederate troops who questioned her-and thought her to be a northern spy. Years later, her adult son had to go before the court and swear to never prosecute the officers or the unit, upon the promise that his step mother would get a government pension. The name of the unfortunate grandma was Virginia Caroline JAMES TURNER and her son was: Francis Marion Turner of lawrence co. Ark. His wife was Martha Runyan and their daughter was my grandma, Ollie Mae Turner Hugg.DOes anyone know of the history of the first arkansas (union)volunteers? thanks..judy grimes, yorba linda ca.
