John Clouse enlisted in Co. D, McCray's Battalion Arkansas Infantry, at Clinton, Arkansas, on March 1, 1862. McCray's Battalion was increased to a regiment, and Clouse's unit became Co. D, 31st Arkansas Infantry, on May 27, 1862. He served with this command throughout the war. On April 9, 1865, the depleted remnants of several Arkanas regiments were reorganized as the 1st Consolidated Arkansas Mounted Rifles, and Clouse was assigned to Company G. He was paroled at Jamestown, North Carolina, on May 1, 1865. When he enlisted in 1862, the descriptive roll described him thus -- age 35, born in Tennessee, eyes blue, hair dark, complexion fair, height 5'10", occupation farmer. He applied for a Confederate pension from Izard County in 1901 (Pension #5637). Following his death in 1914, his widow Rebecca Clouse applied for a Confederate pension.
