James Whitehead enlisted in Co. B, 26th Arkansas Infantry, at Monticello, Arkansas, on May 3, 1862; and was elected third lieutenant the same day. He was subsequently promoted second lieutenant and promoted first lieutenant. He was captured during the engagement at Back Bone Mountain, September 1, 1863; but escaped from Federal custody at Fort Smith, Arkansas, on September 18, 1863; returned to his regiment, and was promoted captain on December 5, 1863. He was captured in Drew County on January 13, 1864; sent to Federal Military Prison, Johnson's Island, Ohio; sent to New Orleans, Louisiana, for exchange, January 9, 1865; and exchanged at Red River Landing, Louisiana, February 26, 1865.
