On January 9, 2010, the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History will host a one-day symposium titled, “James H. Burton, Master Armorer of the Confederacy.”  The event will feature lectures on James Henry Burton and his role in promoting small-arms manufacturing in the South as well as Burton’s Confederate uniform.  This project is supported in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Admission is free.  In addition to hearing the lectures, participants will have one final opportunity to view “Lee and Grant,” the NEH on the Road traveling exhibit developed by the Mid-America Arts Alliance in Kansas City, Missouri.   The exhibit has been at the museum since November 12 and will close on January 9.

In 1861, with very few resources, the Confederacy attempted to arm itself.  Several factories and armories were created to help meet these needs.  James Henry Burton played a major role in the South’s venture in small-arms manufacturing.  Born in Virginia in 1823, Burton was apprenticed to a machine shop at the age of sixteen and his abilities and talent were quickly recognized.  Ten years later he became acting master armorer at Harpers Ferry.

Burton’s mechanical genius flourished at Harpers Ferry. He invented an altered form of Claud Minié’s rifle bullet, which became the primary small-arm projectile during the Civil War.  Burton left America for England, where he became chief engineer of the Royal Small Arms Factory producing the Enfield Rifle.  After his return to America, he became the premier small-arms expert in the Confederacy.  Dr. Matthew Norman, author of Colonel Burton’s Spiller and Burr Revolver: An Untimely Venture in Confederate Small-Arms Manufacturing is a leading expert on Burton and his efforts to promote armaments manufacture in the South.

Burton’s Civil War uniform has been on exhibit at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History since opening in 2001.  One of the finest officers’ uniforms in existence, it was professionally conserved by Jessica Hack, noted textile conservator in New Orleans.  Ms. Hack is an associate with the American Institute for Conservation with extensive experience in the preservation of Civil War textiles.

CWRTO member George Sims is currently conducting research into the organization, movements, battles and history of the Seventeenth Louisiana Infantry Regiment, with the possible goal of a book on the subject. This group was organized in September 1861, and saw action at Shiloh, Chickasaw Bayou, Port Gibson and Vicksburg. Following the surrender at Vicksburg, the regiment was paroled, and at least some of the men were reassembled in northern Louisiana, seeing limited service in that state until 1865.

Any information concerning this regiment, particularly diaries, correspondence or memoirs of any of its members, information on the organization and background of its ten companies, and any leads on the location of any existing regimental or company flags would be greatly appreciated.

George can be contacted at: georgesims@hotmail.com, or Route 2, Box 237-3, Mansfield, Missouri 65704-9564. His phone number is (417) 924-2312.

Your opportunity to help the Battle of Franklin preservationists:

From Miranda Christy:

I am working with a group in Franklin, Tennessee that has had remarkable success in acquiring portions of the 1864 Battle of Franklin battlefield property. This property has been developed with golf courses, strip centers, and structures. The Franklin's Charge (http://www.franklinscharge.com/) group is leading efforts to buy up those properties, remove the improvements, and work to cause the land to be restored to its 1864 appearance. Thus far, in cooperation with the City of Franklin, CWPT, ABPP, and other preservation groups, over $5,000,000 was raised to purchase a golf course, and it is currently being restored as a battlefield park. Also, a Pizza Hut site was purchased and has been restored to park property. Currently, the group is working on acquiring additional property in Franklin.

The reason that I am contacting you and others throughout the country who are supporters of battlefield preservation, is that a local company, Christie Cookies, is offering $10,000 to the not-for-profit that receives the most email votes. We are putting out a call to all civil war preservationists to help us vote and get the word out. I hope you will help us.

To vote, go to http://www.ilovechristiecookies.com/contest/form.asp and select "Franklin's Charge". The contest permits one vote per email address. The only subsequent emails you will receive will be to update you on the results.

We would be very appreciative if you would forward this to your associates.

Thanks very much for your time and consideration.

Best regards,
Miranda
