Battle of Salem Civil
March 11, 1862
The first sign of the Civil War in Fulton County was May 27, 1861. A
meeting was called for the purpose of forming a company of Home Guard.
132 men joined the guard at that time.
Three major incidents occurred in Fulton County.
The Battle of Salem, March 11, 1862
Battle between the Confederate and the Union soldiers in an area along
the South Fork River about a mile northeast of the Salem square.
April 1, 1862
Union General Samuel Curtis stopped at Salem to rest his men on the way
to Batesville. They camped along Cypress Creek, a small stream with the
boundary of Salem.
May 28, 1864
