The Civil War Soldiers
and Sailors System is a computerized database containing basic facts about
servicemen who served on both sides during the Civil War. The initial focus
of the CWSS is the Names Index Project, a project to enter names and
other basic information from 6.3 million soldier records in the National
Archives. The facts about the soldiers were entered from records that are
indexed to many millions of other documents about Union and Confederate
Civil War soldiers maintained by the
National Archives and Records Administration.
Over 197,000 men listed in this
database.
Thousands of Civil War links arranged by State. Virginia's husband
started this website years ago and after he passed away she took it on as
her project. If you can't find a link to it on this site, it probably
doesn't exist.

Mr. Gerdes has passed away but the site is maintained by Brian Howerton,
Jeri Helms Fultz and Jim Martin. Lots of Rosters & Links listed.
The
Confederacy raised between 764 and 1009 regiments over the
period
of the Civil War. The lack of adequate records precludes a more
accurate
count. Regardless of the actual number of regiments recruited, the list
below is but a small fraction of those that were raised. It is hoped
that
many other Civil War regiments will find a "webmaster" in the future to
preserve their history.
