Philo Glen Clayton enlisted in Co. G, 31st Arkansas Infantry, at Point Remove, Arkansas, on March 5, 1862. He was appointed corporal, and was marked as present for duty on all rolls through August 31, 1864. On April 9, 1865, the decimated remnants of several Arkansas regiments, including what was left of the 31st Arkansas, were merged into the 1st Arkansas Consolidated Mounted Rifles. Clayton was assigned to Company G of the consolidated mounted rifles, and was paroled at Jamestown, North Carolina, on May 1, 1865. When he enlisted, he was described as a farmer, age 15, born in Georgia, eyes blue, hair light, complexion fair, height 5'5". Although he was under-age, he managed to stay in the service.
He applied for a Confederate pension from Hempstead County in 1916 (Pension #23114). After his death in 1921, his widow May Clayton applied for a pension.
He completed the 1911 Arkansas Confederate census questionnaire, giving his residence as McNab, Arkansas.
