April 10 --
Arkansas Division SCV
Call to Arms
CONFEDERATE HERITAGE DAY
We need all able-bodied Sons of Confederate Veterans to answer the
call to muster at 11:30 am on April 10, 2004, NE Corner of the
Capital Grounds next to the Confederate Monument!
All SCV members with a uniform and weapon are encouraged to meet the
challenge of this ceremony by honoring the Confederate Dead. An
estimated 60,000 Arkansans enlisted in the Confederate units and at
least 6,800 are known to have been killed or died of disease during
the war.
Beginning at 11:30 a.m. the names of approximately 2,500 Arkansas
soldiers who died between 1861 and 1865 will be read at the
Confederate Monument on the Capital grounds. A bell will ring
following each of the names as they are called.
At noon The Confederate Heritage program will begin with Northern
Brigade Commander Ed Dudley as master of Ceremonies. At least 16
flags used by the Arkansas and other army units will be on display.
Sons of Confederate Veterans, United daughters of the Confederacy,
Children of the Confederacy, and the Military Order of the Stars and
Bars from throughout the state will gather at the Capital.
This annual event is a celebration of three different memorials:
Arkansas Confederate History and Heritage Month (as proclaimed by
Governor Mike Huckabee); Confederate Memorial Day; and Confederate
Flag Day.
CONFEDERATE MEMORIAL DAY, celebrated by all Southern states, is
generally held the last Sunday in April to remember the Confederate
dead. Immediately after the war ended in 1865, Southern women
scattered spring flowers on the graves of both the Union and
Confederate soldiers. In 1868, the United States officially adopted
the tradition for the dead of all wars and it became the national
holiday know as Memorial Day (now held the last Monday in May).
CONFEDERATE FLAG DAY, as designated by Arkansas Statute, is the
Saturday immediately proceeding Easter Sunday. Flag Day commemorates
the wide variety of flags flown by the Confederate States government
and its military units.
